Our Schools
The Alternative Education Centre has been allocated 11 ākonga placements. Schools that make up our consortium are Central Southland College, Northern Southland College, Aparima College, Fiordland College, and Waiau Area School. Central Southland College is our Managing School and ensures our programme meets the needs of ākonga.
Te Kura o Te Aho Pounamu
All Alt Ed ākonga are registered with Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu | The Correspondence School. Ākonga can choose four subjects or can enrol into a course that offers an NCEA Level 1 pathway and National Certificate.
EOTC
Education outside the classroom (EOTC) is an integral part of our Alt Ed programme. Every experience provides the opportunity for ākonga (students) to do and learn new things, simultaneously connecting with new learning and their environment.
Queenstown Camp
A variety of activities are planned for our two-day camp, the highlight is skiing or snowboarding. Getting up the mountain is a close second! We are fortunate to live close to several of New Zealand’s Great Walks. Planning and preparation is spread out over two terms, and the 3-day walks are the reward at the end. Amazing achievement!
Christmas Project
Ākonga are challenged to design a variety of Christmas products. This group decided to make trees using donated, recycled pallets.
